If the financial jump from a Fiesta Trend to one fitted with an Ecoboost engine were small, we’d tell you to leap with both feet. However, the difference is actually around £1800, meaning you’re stuck with this engine if you want to get behind the wheel of an affordable Fiesta. It’s a shame, because similarly priced rivals fitted with turbocharged petrols are a better bet both for performance and fuel economy.

We still rather like the Fiesta, because it’s a more accomplished small car than many, but not so much in this most affordable spec. For similar money and equipment, we’d go for a Polo SE with the 94bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine.
