On sale November | Price from £32,000 (est.)

If you often find yourself struggling to load your car due to masses of luggage or having more bottoms than seats available, perhaps the new Mercedes T-Class people carrier is for you.

A sister model to the Renault Kangoo, the T-Class is based on the existing Mercedes Citan van. It has sliding rear doors, so getting in and out in tight parking spaces should be a breeze. There’s also up to 517 litres of luggage space – that’s 31 litres more than in the already capacious Mercedes B-Class MPV, so getting your family’s holiday luggage in should be hassle-free.

While the T-Class is based on the Citan, it has been given its own styling identity, with a more aggressive front bumper, a wider grille and thinner headlights than the van. It rides on 16in steel or alloy wheels as standard, while 17in alloys are an alternate option.

Inside, the T-Class has a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment display along with a multi-function steering wheel and rounded air vents. While using the touchscreen on the move could be distracting compared with using physical controls, you can also just ask the T-Class to do certain things for you by saying “Hey Mercedes”.

Both petrol and diesel engines will be offered from the outset. This includes two four-cylinder petrol engines – the T160 and the T180 – producing 101bhp in the former and 129bhp in the latter. The diesel engines (the T160d and T180d) offer similar power, from 94bhp to 114bhp. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard on all engines, while a seven-speed automatic is optional.

An electric version, the EQT, is expected to be released later in 2023. It is expected to adopt the same 59bhp electric motor as the Renault Kangoo ZE van and be able to take you up to 120 miles in real-world conditions between charges.

A range of driver assistance systems is also offered, allowing the T-Class to control its own position within a lane and look out for cars in your blindspot. Among the MPV’s safety kit is a central airbag designed to stop the driver and front passenger from colliding during an accident.

Pricing has yet to be revealed, but we expect the T-Class to start from around £32,000, making it more expensive than rivals such as the Volkswagen Caddy.
