New MG Cyber concept previews flagship SUV with radical styling and sporty character
Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction characterised by its futuristic settings, in societies dominated by advanced technology. And while the new MG Cyber concept looks like it belongs in one of these fictional, far-off universes, it’s actually something that we could see on our streets in the near future should it end up in this country.
Indeed, the new Cyber concept depicts a future production flagship SUV, and it dons some premium styling that previews what’s in store for MG’s top-of-the-range models. The brand has described it as a ‘D-segment’ model, meaning it’s a larger, family-sized car, but it’ll also have a sporty character, likely to take a swipe at the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric.
Despite being positioned as a sports SUV, the Cyber is still, of course, an MG, so we expect it’ll be more keenly priced than those rivals. Naturally, being a design concept, there are no confirmed technical details or pricing just yet. In fact, it’s still unclear if the production version will even make it to the UK.
Still, when it does go into production, it could make use of MG’s semi-solid-state battery technology that’s due to be featured in the MG4 Urban. These batteries use mostly solid-state electrolytes instead of the usual liquid or gel electrolytes and are designed to bring improved range, faster charging and quicker acceleration compared with traditional electric car batteries. In any case, the production Cyber SUV will need to manage up to 400 miles of range to keep up with its key rivals.
The Cyber SUV concept was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside a smaller concept previewing a Renault 5-sized electric hatchback: the MG Go. That concept seems to be closer to production than the Cyber, which is still yet to be confirmed for the UK and would need to carve out a spot that distinguishes it from the existing MG IM6 SUV.
