All-new Mazda 6 revealed almost

Mazda has released details of how it will cut the fuel consumption and emissions of its next-generation models.

Part of the efficiency programme is to make replacements for current cars at least 100kg lighter.

The new bodyshell which Mazda calls Skyactiv-Body is part of that programme and thanks to greater use of high-strength steel, it is 8% lighter than before despite being 30% stiffer. It will be used for the next Mazda 6 family car.

Engines and transmissions will also be honed for efficiency and will help slash emissions to below 120g/km by 2012 and 105/km by 2015 for both the 6 and Mazda 3.

These emissions are equivalent to a petrol Mazda 6 with average fuel consumption of 45mpg and a diesel that can do nearly 70mpg.
