Audi A2 rebirth

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has said that there could be a new A2 on the way.

The A2 hatchback was a MPV-styled supermini built by Audi between 2000 and 2005.

Its aluminium bodywork made it light and, when powered by a 1.4-litre diesel engine, its official average fuel economy was more than 64mpg.

However, despite failing to sell well at the time, Stadler said that the A2 was ahead of its time, and that it would probably market considerably better in the current climate.

Even with the original versions compact dimensions, it was surprisingly big inside and could carry a family of four with ease.

Despite being a six-year-old design, it produces only 116g/km of CO2, allowing it to compete well with some of today's most efficient cars.

Audi unveiled the five-door A1 Sportback at the Paris motor show in October, leaving the A2 name available for a new model.
