Audi Q2 vs Audi Q3: interiors

These desirable SUVs both have plenty of strengths, but which is right for you: the cheaper Q2 or the larger Q3?...

Driving position, visibility, build quality

Both cars offer enough seat and steering wheel adjustment to accommodate drivers of most shapes and sizes. However, you're less likely to suffer from back ache on a long journey in the Audi Q2, because it comes with electronically-adjustable lumbar support as standard, whereas the Audi Q3 only has this if you upgrade to top-of-the-line Vorsprung trim.

The Q2 also gets a 12.3in digital instrument display, compared with the Q3's 10.25in item. As a result, the Q2's looks a bit more modern, even though both are easy to read and feature sharp graphics.

Elsewhere on the Q2's dashboard you find an abundance of soft-touch plastics and switches that are satisfyingly clicky. The Q3 doesn't feel cheap inside, but it's a definite step down, with hard plastics in some areas that you often come into contact with, including around the gear lever and climate controls.

Each car delivers good forward visibility, even at night, thanks to bright LED headlights, slim windscreen pillars and the sort of elevated driving position that SUV buyers typically seek (although you do sit that bit higher in the Q3).

On the other hand, your over-the-shoulder view is rather restricted in both. And while this is somewhat mitigated by the presence of standard rear parking sensors, you need to pay extra for a rear-view camera, whichever car you choose.

Infotainment systems

The Q2 has an 8.3in screen on top of its dashboard, which is controlled by a rotary dial and shortcut buttons mounted between the front seats. This set-up minimises distraction on the move, helped by fast responses and intuitive menus. Our recommended Sport trim also comes with built-in sat-nav with free updates for up to five years. And if you’d rather use an app on your phone that's no problem, because Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard.

The Q3 matches the Q2 in offering built-in sat-nav, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. What's more, its screen is bigger than the Q2's at 10.1in, and features slightly more sophisticated graphics. However, the screen is mounted lower and doesn't have tactile controls (instead, you have to press icons on the screen itself), so it requires you to divert more of your attention away from the road to use it.
