Barcelona aims for zero-emissions

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has today joined forces with the Spanish city of Barcelona to help it achieve zero-emission transport.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by all the concerned parties who will now work together to find areas where zero-emission transport can be promoted within the city.
Barcelona wants to create the conditions necessary to make electric vehicles (EVs) an alternative to traditional means of powered transport.
Promoting electric vehicles
The city plans to offer tax breaks for EV buyers, dedicated driving zones and parking spaces for electric vehicles.
Barcelona plans to have established 191 charging points in the city by 2011.
Renault revealed four new electric vehicles at the Frankfurt motor show that will go on sale between 2011 and 2013. In August, Nissan unveiled its LEAF, the medium-sized hatchback destined to become the first mass-produced electric car.
Jordi William Carnes, a city of Barcelona representative, said: 'The zero-emission mobility programme is one of our commitments. When considering the population density of the city, there is a need for concrete actions to promote sustainability.'
