For
The Mercedes-Benz CLS mixes the size and space of a traditional executive saloon with the desirable looks and sporty character of a coupe. Inside, most of the fitments feel suitably classy for a car of this price and leather upholstery is standard across the range.

Fitted with this 350 CDI engine, it’s powerful and fairly frugal while also being much smoother and quieter than the four-cylinder in the 250 CDI. It’s mated to Mercedes’ seven-speed automatic transmission, which does a good job of slushing ratios together for smooth progress.

It drives well considering its size and heft. The steering is light but also reassuringly precise, which means it’s easy to drive on the motorway. For an even broader array of talents you can specify the optional air suspension that allows the car to feel sporty when you want it and comfortable when you don’t.

Mercedes’ reliability record is the envy of many other manufacturers and the brand has consistently scored very highly in the JD Power survey.

Against
Resale values for the CLS aren’t as strong as they are on other Mercs.

The ride, if you stick with the standard springs, is fairly firm and too much wind noise makes its way into the cabin from the windscreen and door mirrors.

Unlike the cheaper and more practical E-Class, the CLS is only a four-seater as the centre console runs the full length of the cabin. Rivals like the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can squeeze five passengers in for short journeys.

Should I add any options?
Equipment levels are good as standard with DAB radio, climate and cruise control, sat-nav, Bluetooth and electrically adjustable seats all included.

We’d recommend shelling out for the air suspension, which massively broadens the appeal of the car, making it sportier when you need it and more comfortable otherwise.
