Deal of the Day: Renault Mégane
We’ve driven the Renault Mégane and found it to be both cheap to run and well-equipped.
With a new Mégane arriving this summer, prices of the outgoing model have plummeted. We’ve found a tempting deal online for a diesel Mégane hatchback.
For
The diesel engine is both frugal and efficient, with this particular model claiming an impressive 78.5mpg and 93g/km of CO2. The engine is also very smooth and quiet.
The Mégane handles well, with relatively responsive and grippy steering. Body roll is kept to a minimum, too.
Inside, the Mégane is fitted with high quality materials, which give it a reasonably classy feel. The digital speedo and push-to-start button help the Mégane stand out from rivals.
Against
The four-star Euro NCAP crash test result is a little disappointing for a Renault, although all models come with front, side and curtain airbags.
The rear leg room is poor and the sloping roof can make it feel cramped. The ride isn’t great, either, and can feel uncomfortable on bumpy roads.
Should I add any options?
The Dynamique Nav model comes with a host of equipment, including air-con, Bluetooth, sat-nav and dual-zone climate control. It also has keyless entry and starting, and automatic wipers and lights. There's not much more you'll need, but the large saving means you could add many luxury extras.
What are its rivals?
Both the Ford Focus and VW Golf offer more spacious cabins and better ride quality, but they are also more expensive. A base diesel Focus costs around £18,295, while the cheapest diesel Golf costs around £20,370.
