Deal of the Day: Volkswagen Golf Estate GTD

Save £3370 on the new Volkswagen Golf Estate GTD
Deal of the Day: Volkswagen Golf Estate GTD

The hatchback VW Golf GTD is a great car that offers all the excitement of the GTI with lower running costs. An estate version of the GTD is now available but our major gripe with the 181bhp load-lugger is its steep price. However, we’ve found a major saving on the estate online that makes it a much more tempting prospect.

For

You’ll be pleased to hear that despite its increase in weight and size, the estate version is still as great to drive as the hatchback. The steering is precise and there's plenty of grip. The GTD Estate won't cost the earth to run either – fuel economy is a claimed 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions are 115g/km.

There’s more to the GTD Estate than its pace and economy, though. It has the best boot in its class with a low load lip and massive load bay, and the spacious cabin offers plenty of room for passengers to stretch out in on long journeys.

Against

It doesn’t ride too well on poor road surfaces, but it’s still an easy car to drive day-to-day and offers a much better drive than the Skoda Octavia Estate vRS.

Even with this saving, though, the GTD remains more expensive than the Seat Leon ST 2.0 TDI 184 FR. However, strong VW Golf resale values do mean it’s still worth considering over the Seat.

Should I add any options?

The GTD comes with plenty of equipment, including a 5.8in colour touchscreen, air-con and 17in alloys along with sporty body kit, but a notable omission from the spec list is sat-nav. This is a pricey optional extra at £750, but it’ll be worth it if you plan on doing lots of big journeys.
