The Volkswagen Golf and T-Roc will gain new full hybrid engines at the end of this year, offering buyers a mid-way point between the brand’s mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid power options.
The new hybrid set-up – which will simply be designated as ‘Hybrid’ in the Golf to separate it from plug-in hybrid ‘eHybrid’ variants – combines Volkswagen’s 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with a small 1.6kWh battery and two electric motors – one of which will act as a generator.
No technical details have been revealed yet, but Volkswagen has confirmed the hybrid models will be able to run on electric power alone, particularly at low speeds in urban environments. You can also decouple the petrol engine and combine it with the generator to allow it to generate energy for the electric motor and extend the car’s electric range.
Otherwise, you can use the petrol engine and electric motor in collaboration with one another. That means the electric motor can provide extra support for the engine when you need additional power.

Three driving modes will be available in both the new Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid: Eco, Comfort and Sport. In Eco, the maximum power output of the hybrid system is limited to 70% to preserve energy, while Comfort allows you to use the system how you want. Sport mode makes use of the generator to allow more power to be available quickly.
The full hybrid versions of the Volkswagen Golf and T-Roc will arrive at the end of this year. Prices haven’t yet been revealed, but for the Golf at least, the full hybrid variant will slot in between mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. That means the Golf Hybrid will likely start at around £33,000, while the T-Roc might start at a slightly higher price.
That would make the Golf Hybrid slightly cheaper than a Honda Civic, but pricier than a Toyota Corolla. Meanwhile, the T-Roc would be more expensive to buy than the Lexus LBX and Toyota Yaris Cross.
