Whether you’re an adventurous family or small business owner, you’ve almost certainly heard of the all-new all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz.

Available as a practical five-seat passenger carrier or hard-working panel van, its stunning modern-retro design, 256-mile all-electric range (WLTP), advanced in-car and safety technology and carbon net-zero life cycle have helped it become one of the most desirable and awarded vans on the market. It even carries a prestigious four-star What Car? review.

But, what really helps the ID. Buzz to shine in the ever-growing electric van field is its sheer versatility. Its all-electric underpinnings, and its wheel-on-each-corner design, has allowed Volkswagen to completely reimagine its interior, maximising space, comfort and style unlike anything else.

To prove just how versatile it is, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has teamed up with companies in Germany to create five stunning ID. Buzz-based concept vehicles – including a paramedic car, luxury shuttle bus, and even a refrigeration unit. While not available in the UK, these innovative conversions demonstrate what the ID. As standard, the ID. Buzz passenger carrier comes with versatile seating for five and up to 1121 litres of luggage space – all accessed with wide-opening easy-access sliding doors. Dutch firm Snoeks has built on this to create the Flex-Cab.

Taking inspiration from the VW Caravelle the Flex-Cab is a five-seat luxury shuttle bus where the three-seat rear bench can be configured in two positions – standard or extra leg room. The bench can also be completely folded (including the base) to reveal vast amounts of rear space.

Traditional paramedic vehicles need plenty of room in the back to house patients, paramedics and medical equipment, while also being ready to go at a moment’s notice. So, with 3.9m3 of load space the VW ID. Buzz Cargo is the perfect candidate. Plus, with 256 miles of range as standard, and rapid charging from 5% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes, it’s ready to go the distance in any emergency.

German company Bösenberg’s near-production ID. Buzz paramedic car has space for three people up front, while the cargo area has been converted into a workspace with all medical equipment fully fitted. The clever modular concept means complete integration of the equipment requires minimal changes to the base of the ID. Buzz Cargo.

With 3.9m3 of load space standard, including room for two Euro pallets, the VW ID. Buzz Cargo already offers plenty rear space. How can you improve on that? Well, simply add more.

Veth Automotive has added a Luton-style box body to the rear of the ID. Buzz Cargo, offering an enormous 6.0m3 of storage space while also boosting payload from 650kg to 680kg. The sides and back can be fitted with conventional or sliding doors or roll-up shutters, making access simple and easy.

Last-mile delivery vehicles need to be agile and efficient, making the all-electric VW ID. Buzz Cargo with its 11m turning circle (the same as a VW Golf) the perfect vehicle for urban-based couriers and small businesses.

That’s why Wükaro has used the ID. Buzz to create a refrigeration vehicle. It uses a 230V low-profile cooling unit on the roof to chill the rear cargo section. Powering the roof-mounted unit are four lithium-ion batteries each with 100Ah of nominal charge. The batteries are housed within the wheel arches to save space and allow the unit to run independently for up to eight hours.

So, whether you’re an adventurous family looking for more room or a small business or fleet manager looking for a hard-working electric van to join your ranks, these five concept vehicles prove just how versatile the ID. Buzz really is.
