Despite there not being a huge number of examples on the market to choose from, the pick-up truck class is surprisingly competitive. That’s because the best examples aren’t just capable of hauling hefty loads and tackling tricky terrain – they’re also solid family vehicles too. While the Isuzu D-Max has historically been good at the latter thanks to its extensive safety kit, its weak engine paled in comparison to rivals – but this could all change with a new mid-life update.
Indeed, the D-Max has been updated for the 2026 model year, bringing upgrades to its engine and standard kit. The old 1.9-litre diesel engine has been replaced with a larger four-cylinder 2.2-litre unit, though power output remains unchanged, at 161bhp. However, torque is improved, at 295 lb ft. It can be paired with either a new eight-speed automatic gearbox or six-speed manual.
It will come with a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system, which means you’re able to switch between two- and four-wheel-drive on the move at speeds of up to 62mph. You also get a rear differential lock – which should give you extra traction and control when overcoming uneven terrain – and a designated rough terrain mode.

As before, you can have your D-Max in Single Cab, Extended Cab and Double Cab form. Practicality is unchanged, with a maximum payload of 1205kg and a towing capacity of 3500kg. That’s on par with a Ford Ranger.
Four trim levels are available: Utility, DL20, DL40 and V-Cross. Specifications vary depending on which bodystyle you opt for. New standard safety features include driver distraction warning and lane-keep assist as part of a new driver monitoring system. Top-spec models get a new 360-degree parking camera, a leather interior and new 18in alloy wheels.
Buyers of the new Isuzu D-Max will benefit from a five-year, 125,000-mile warranty. The first examples will appear in UK showrooms in July, with prices starting at £33,495. That’s only slightly more expensive than a KGM Musso, and it’s much cheaper than a Toyota Hilux.
