Learner driver test fees rip-off

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is taking action against websites that charge learner drivers additional fees to book a theory or practical test.

advertisment

Although the booking service is free with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), through the Direct.gov.uk website, the AA complained to the OFT that learners are paying surcharges of up to 65% on top of the standard fees.

The OFT has confirmed it will take action against sites that fail to clearly explain their additional administration fees on top of the standard 31 charge for a theory test or the 62/75 weekday/weekend cost for a practical exam.

AA Driving School director Simon Douglas said: 'Forking out big admin fees for test "booking services" is a waste of money that few families can afford.

'Leaner drivers can book directly with the DSA for no extra charge.'
