The new petrol engines are the 372bhp 5.0-litre and 505bhp supercharged 5.0 V8s recently introduced to the Jaguar range, while the diesel is a 242bhp version of the group's new 3.0-litre V6.

The lower-powered V8 won't be offered in the UK, but is important for markets in America, Russia and the Far East.

The two engines that are destined for the UK deliver up to 29% more power and 36% more torque than current engines while lowering fuel consumption and CO2 by as much as 10%. They also meet EU emissions targets not due until 2011.

There are changes on all models to the suspension, steering, brakes and automatic transmissions to cope with the extra performance, while the Terrain Response electronic off-roading system has new programmes to stabilise trailers and make it easier to drive away on sand and over rocks.

There's also active roll control to reduce swaying motion through bends, while the Range Rovers have continuously variable, electronically adjusted suspension.
