Mini to recall 235,000 cars

BMW will recall 235,000 Minis around the world after a potentially fire-causing fault was found in an electric water pump.
The recall affects various Mini models, including Cooper S and John Cooper Works versions, that were produced between March 2006 and January 2011. This includes nearly 30,000 vehicles in the UK.
BMW confirmed there had been very few cases of the fault, but a spokesman said: 'In more extreme cases, it could create a heat build-up in the wiring and some smouldering. Potentially it could cause a fire.
'We are not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with this. The important thing is that when people receive the letter, they simply go to their dealer and get a new water pump fitted if there is a problem.'
Owners of cars at risk will be contacted by letter to arrange for the part to be replaced. In the meantime, BMW says the vehicles remain safe to drive.
Replacement of the pump will be free and should take no more than an hour to complete.
Mini owners should contact their dealer with any concerns.
