More motorists caught on mobiles

The number of drivers caught using a hand-held mobile phone when driving has risen sharply, according to the Government's official figures.

The number of drivers who were fined for illegal phone use has risen by a third in 12 months, from 129,700 in 2005 to 168,000 in 2006.

Using a hand-held mobile phone was made illegal in 2003, when the penalty was a 30 fine.

Last year, the law was toughened up, with drivers now facing a 60 fine and three points on their licence if they are caught.
