More VW Up versions on the way
* Five-door Up for Frankfurt show * MPV variant being considered * VW chief keen on performance version...
The new Volkswagen Up is going to spawn a new family of models, company research and development boss Ulrich Hackenberg has revealed to What Car?.
First to come along will be a five-door version, set to be revealed at Frankfurt motor show. It will be the same length as the three-door and be mechanically identical. With the three-door priced from around 8000, expect a small price rise when it goes on sale early next year.
Hackeneurg also revealed that more body styles were likely. Company insiders hinted that one of the stronger options is an MPV variant, previewed by the Space Up concept of three years ago.
Many more engine options are also going to come along to join the existing 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines. Two- and four-cylinder versions are in development and Hackenberg is also keen on the idea of turbocharging the three-cylinder unit to create a performance version.
A three-cylinder diesel engine is on the cards, too.
An all-electric version will go on sale in 2013. The battery powered Up is promised to have a predicted range of around 100 miles.
