Lexus is a brand that’s known for premium comfort, but it’s going out of its comfort zone with a new model that enters new territory for the Japanese brand: the new six-seat Lexus TZ.

Indeed, the new TZ is the first all-electric three-row SUV from Lexus, and as a premium six-seater, it occupies a fairly sparsely-populated space in the market. Its rivals include the premium-badged Mercedes EQS SUV and Volvo EX90, as well as the more mainstream Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. Unlike those cars, though, the TZ does not offer space for a seventh occupant.

At the heart of the new TZ sits a hefty 95.8kWh battery alongside two electric motors (one at the front and one at the rear) pumping out a combined 402bhp. As such, the TZ comes equipped with Lexus’s four-wheel-drive system, allowing it to sprint from 0-62mph in just 5.4sec – slightly quicker than a Volvo EX90 Twin Motor, and pretty impressive for such a big SUV.

From that battery, the TZ yields an official range of up to 330 miles, which lags behind the figures of the EQS SUV (up to 364 miles) and EX90 (up to 383 miles). However, it can travel further than AWD versions of the Kia EV9, which can officially manage up to 316 miles.

With a maximum charging speed of 150kW, the TZ should be able to top up its battery from 10-80% in around 35 minutes in ideal conditions. Other rivals can charge even faster, at speeds in excess of 200kW.

The TZ will be offered with an eight-speed gearbox with manually-operated paddle shifters, to give you the sensation of using a manual gearbox. It’ll also have an artificial engine sound and steering wheel feedback.

Like the recently-revealed Lexus ES saloon, the TZ’s exterior styling is minimalist compared with previous Lexus models, with a less aggressive front end design, sleek L-shaped daytime running lights and a light bar spanning the width of the rear. It’s around the same size as an EQS SUV.

According to Lexus, the TZ’s interior has been designed to act like a “driving lounge”, with minimalist touches continuing throughout. It gets the same set-up as inside the new ES, with a 12.3in digital driver’s display behind the wheel and a large 14in central infotainment touchscreen. Like in that car, most of the TZ’s functions will be controlled through the screen, as well as some touch-sensitive haptic controls on the steering wheel. The system will work alongside the LexusLink+ app which, like that offered in some Audi models, allows access to a range of services, including remote charging and interior pre-heating.

UK specifications haven’t yet been revealed, but the TZ will have heated and ventilated seats in the front and second row and heated seats in the third row, likely on higher-spec models. It also has ottoman-style footrests for front- and second-row passengers and a panoramic glass roof.

With the third row of seats in place, the TZ has 290 litres of boot space on offer. That’s not quite as much as the 333 litres in the Kia EV9, or the 310 litres in the EX90. You can, of course, fold the third row of seats in the TZ down for extra space. Unlike in the EV9, there’s no additional storage space under the bonnet.

The Lexus TZ will arrive in the UK later this year. Prices aren’t yet revealed, but we’d expect them to be pretty lofty, starting at around £75,000. That would put it in line with the Volvo EX90, but it would be much cheaper than a Mercedes EQS SUV.
