New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vs used Volvo XC90 T8
The Outlander PHEV is one of the best-selling hybrids in the UK, but would you be better off buying a two-year-old Volvo XC90 T8 for the same sort of money?...
New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vs used Volvo XC90 T8 – alternatives
The Outlander PHEV has few direct rivals, but a cheaper and smaller new option is the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid (above). It's related to our 2019 Car of the Year, the fully electric e-Niro, and while it isn't the game changer that car is, it's cheap to run and comes with the reassurance of a seven-year warranty.
Alternatively, you might want to consider a used Audi Q7 e-tron (below). This is unusual among plug-in hybrids in that it combines a diesel engine – not a petrol one – with its electric motor. Yet it's incredibly smooth and quiet, as well as very frugal. Add in a beautifully finished interior and it's very appealing, although unlike the XC90 T8, it's only a five-seater.
New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vs used Volvo XC90 T8 – which is best?
Think of the benefits of running a plug-in hybrid and your mind will quickly settle on running costs. However, while both of these cars deliver in that respect, the Outlander requires you to compromise on practicality, perceived quality and performance, whereas the XC90 excels in all these areas.
It's this breadth of talent that makes it the one we'd choose and explains why it's also the 2019 What Car? Plug-in Hybrid of the Year.
