Summer is coming, and if you don’t believe it, then maybe the arrival of the new Renault 4 Plein Sud will change your mind.

Indeed, you can now have your Renault 4 with a folding canvas roof, in the form of the new Plein Sud – meaning ‘due south’ – variant. It’s inspired by the old folding roof option available with the original Renault 4 from the 1960s.

Instead of being a convertible in the traditional sense, the Plein Sud’s folding roof works more like a sunroof, measuring at 80x92cm. It can be opened fully or in intermediate positions.

Despite being technically unchanged from the fixed-roof 4, with a 52kWh battery and 148bhp electric motor, the Plein Sud has a slightly shorter range of 242 miles, instead of 245 miles. This is due to the extra weight of the foldable roof.

Otherwise, the Plein Sud still offers the same 420 litres of boot space as the fixed-roof version.

It does, however, get some new safety tech to align it with new EU regulations, with a driver monitoring system and a new emergency stop assist feature.

The Plein Sud variant is available with mid-spec Techno+ trim, which comes with Google-based infotainment, wireless phone charging and adaptive cruise control, as well as top-spec Iconic+ trim, which adds a different alloy wheel design, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

The Renault 4 Plein Sud will arrive in autumn this year. Prices start at £27,445, after the Government Electric Car Grant is applied – £4000 more than the regular 4’s starting price.
