New sports car called Jaguar F-type

The Jaguar F-type has been revealed as the production version of the stunning C-X16 concept car that was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

The two-seater F-type convertible will hit showrooms in summer 2013, while a coupe version should follow around 12 months later. Hot editions are expected further down the line.

While the C-X16 concept car was powered by a V6 hybrid petrol engine, it's expected that the launch F-type will be powered by a conventional V6 petrol engine, with the option of a manual gearbox.

Jaguars global brand director, Adrian Hallmark, said: 'The F-type will have the same agility, precision, feel and responsiveness as the XKR-S. We're totally committed to performance hybrid technology but it won't necessarily have the same powertrain as the concept. We'll start with non-hybrid at launch.'

The F-type sits between Porsche's Boxster and 911 Cabriolet, which points to a pricetag starting from 55,000. 'It will be priced lower than XK and will sit uniquely in the sports car segment,' said Hallmark

Hallmark added that positive reaction to the C-X16 concept car at the Frankfurt motor show had accelerated the development of the new car.

Both the prototypes and the production cars will be built at Jaguars Castle Bromwich factory in the Midlands.

Full technical details of the new car will be announced later this year.
