Nissan GT-R sets new records
* Car also has record waiting list
* 1000 Brits want one but they may have to wait
Nissan's latest supercar, the GT-R, is setting new records on and off the track.
It has just become the fastest production car to lap the notorious 13-mile Nurburgring circuit in Germany, while the queue of people wanting to buy one in the UK now stretches to an unprecedented two years.
The GT-R is a two-plus-two coupe, with power coming from a 480bhp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 engine that drives all four wheels through a six-speed, twin-clutch paddle-shift gearbox.
In the hands of test driver Tochio Suzuki, it has just lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes 29 seconds, beating the long-standing previous record, held by a Porsche 911 GT2, by three seconds.
The record-breaking GT-R was a standard production model running on normal road tyres.
In the UK, more than 1000 people have now put down a 3500 deposit for one. The total European order bank, including the UK, is only 1400.
With the 52,900 car not due in this country until March 2009, it means that some people could be waiting until 2011 to get their hands on what they have bought.
