Plug-in Range Rover revealed

* Electric-only range of 20 miles
This plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport has emissions of just 89g/km and can drive for up to 20 miles on battery power alone.
Called the Range-e, the prototype is in development now and will make its first public appearance at the Geneva motor show next month.
It's unlikely to arrive in showrooms until 2013 at the earliest, but it is already in development with the help of a 340 million 'eco loan' from the European Investment Bank, which Land Rover secured in 2010.
There aren't too many details at this stage, but the car has a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, eight-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor and batteries.
The motor is housed within the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission to help save weight, a system being co-developed with other manufacturers.
Besides the full-electric range of 20 miles impressive considering the size and weight of the Range Rover Sport it's based on the V6 diesel means the Range-e has an overall range of 690 miles.
This new Range Rover will also mark the start of a new family of lightweight platforms being developed by the company.
