The arrival of summer usually brings an exponential increase in two types of vehicle on the road: ice cream vans and drop-top cars. Today, we’re talking about the latter – specifically the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 Convertible, which has arrived just in time for the warm weather to settle in.
Indeed, you’ll now be able to buy your hardcore 911 GT3 with an automatically-folding roof, making it the only convertible in the 911 range that’s available exclusively as a two-seater. It uses the same 4.0-litre six cylinder engine as the regular GT3, pumping out 494bhp. Due to the extra weight of the roof, the GT3 Convertible completes a 0-62mph sprint 0.5sec slower than the regular coupé, at 3.9sec. That’s not quite as quick as a Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder or some cabriolet versions of the 911 Carrera, but it’s still speedy.

The new GT3 Convertible weighs a total of 1497kg, which is 35kg heavier than the regular coupé fitted with Porsche’s six-speed manual sports gearbox (which the GT3 Convertible comes with). Porsche has worked to keep this extra heaviness to a minimum, using carbon fibre across the bonnet, wings and doors and ceramic composite brakes as standard instead of cast iron ones. It also uses a lithium-ion battery, which Porsche claims saves around four kilograms compared with a conventional battery.
According to Porsche, the roof takes around 12 seconds to open or close, and can be adjusted at speeds of up to 31mph. There’s also a wind deflector designed to reduce buffeting inside the car, which can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph via a button in the centre console.
Inside, you get four-way adjustable sports seats as standard, with carbon fibre bucket seats available as an option. As standard, the interior is furnished with leather, including the steering wheel. Like the regular GT3, you start the engine using a rotary ignition switch instead of a simple button, and it gets two 7in screens for the driver’s display and infotainment.

In keeping with its trackside credentials, the GT3 Convertible comes with a retractable rear spoiler with a sporty Gurney flap to increase downforce further, as well as the front spoiler lip and rear diffuser from the regular GT3 coupé. The GT3 convertible takes the 20in front wheels and 21in rear wheels from the limited-edition 911 S/T sports car.
The Porsche 911 GT3 Convertible will arrive in the coming months. Prices start at £200,500, which is around £42,000 pricier than the regular coupé. The McLaren 750S Spider and Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder will cost you more to buy.
Buyers of the 911 GT3 Convertible can also opt for a ‘Street Style’ pack which adds some graphics on the exterior, gold brake callipers, two-tone leather inside, adaptive sports seats and a redesigned gear lever. That costs an extra £24,110.
