Porsche launches new Boxster Spyder

Porsche's new Boxster Spyder will be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show next month, ahead of its UK launch in February 2010.

Developed to be driven with the roof-down, the Boxster Spyder has a low-slung, lightweight soft-top, with extra-low side windows and two bulges on the single-piece rear lid. Porsche says the car's stretched silhouette is reminiscent of the Carrera GT's.

The Spyder weighs just 1275kg, making it the lightest model in the Boxster range, and 80kg lighter than the Boxster S. Combined with a lower centre of gravity and revised suspension, the car promises scintillating dynamics to reflect its unique look.

Performance
The 3.4-litre engine, positioned ahead of the rear axle, develops 320bhp, which is 10bhp more than in the Boxster S.

With the optional PDK semi-auto gearbox and Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder can blast from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 166mph, and average fuel consumption is 30.4mpg.

Around 60% of Boxster buyers add the 1920 PDK gearbox, and Porsche reckons it'll be even more popular on the Spyder.

The Sports Chrono Package includes launch control and promises an uncompromisingly sporty drive.

Historic drive
Porsche says that the Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built in 1953. Both models are mid-engined, offering low weight and agility for authentic roadster dynamics.

In 2004 and 2008, Porsche produced limited-edition Boxsters with the Spyder badge, but this new car is a specially developed and upgraded production model.

When can I buy one?
The Boxster Spyder will be available to buy from February 2010, and prices will start from 44,643.
