RAC Future Car Challenge go for 2011

The RAC Future Car Challenge for advanced, ultra-low-carbon vehicles will run again from Brighton to London on November 5 this year, the day before the 115th running of the veteran car rally in the opposite direction.

The event will kick off from Brighton's Madeira Drive, culminating in a parade and display in Londons Regent Street. Last year's event attracted a crowd of over 250,000 to the free display of competitor's cars.

Fifteen awards will be on offer to the most efficient vehicles over the 60-mile route, across different categories of cars and propulsion systems. There will also be an award for the best car voted by the public on Regent Street.

This year around 80 cars are expected to take part, up from 64 last year. All cars powered by internal combustion engines should have an official CO2 figure below 110g/km, although nine of the 14 internal combustion engine-powered cars that took part last year registered above that figure, according to analysis by Imperial College London.

Last year's overall winner was an electric prototype Volkswagen Golf e-motion driven by What Car? magazine editor Jim Holder. What Car? readers also competed in a 99 g/km Golf Bluemotion. As official sponsor of the event, What Car? will be competing once again this year and looking to retain its crown.
