Ssangyong has revealed this XIV-1 concept car at Frankfurt.

The XUV 1 is a supermini-sized crossover, or Crossover Utility Vehicle as Ssangyong describes it. The company says the XIV-1 will have the high seating position of an SUV, but 'without any compromise in running costs', suggesting a two-wheel-drive set-up.

It has been designed with space and easy access in mind, with rotating seats, a double-action lift-up and pull-down tailgate.

Ssangyong says the concept car has an innovative interior, with all the major controls operated via mobile devices, and what it calls 'smart instruments'.

The car has a uniquely flexible seating layout, with 1+1+2 or 1+3 seat arrangements. It also has rear-hinged doors, like those on the Vauxhall Meriva.

It has a wraparound windscreen Ssangyong says the glass area is virtually uninterrupted to the rear pillars. This is complemented by a panoramic sunroof.

The range starts off with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines with both manual and automatic transmissions.

An electric version is being developed, as well as a range extending electric car.

The concept car was only finished last week, but a production version - with toned down exterior and interior treatment - is due in 2013. Prices are expected to start at around 15,000.
