Citroën has warned its UK customers not to drive four of its models after a brake failure issue was discovered.

The issue affected some of its newest right-hand-drive models: the Citroën C3, ë-C3, C3 Aircross and ë-C3 Aircross.

The upcoming Vauxhall Frontera and Frontera Electric – which are also under the Stellantis parent company – are also affected, but deliveries of those models are yet to begin.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Stellantis said: “During our regular quality process checks, an investigation revealed that certain right-hand-drive Citroën C3 and Citroën C3 Aircross could have a pedal box assembly that is not to the correct specification and is at risk of loss of brake capability.”

While Citroën stated that the automatic emergency braking (AEB) and electronic parking brake were still operational, a decision was made to issue the stop-drive notice to “protect all customers”.

The French brand added that affected customers would be given a replacement car while theirs are checked. Customers with concerns are advised to contact Citroën Customer Services on 0800 093 9393, or Vauxhall on 0800 026 0034 – or, alternatively, you can contact your local dealer.

This isn’t the first stop-drive notice to have affected Citroën cars. In June, Stellantis issued an immediate stop-drive notice for owners of the second-generation C3 and first-generation DS 3 models due to an airbag issue.

This came after a French woman suffered fatal injuries from the Takata airbags fitted to a 2014 Citroën C3.

Since then, the recall has been expanded to include a further four models: the Citroën C4 (2010-2013), Citroën DS4 (2010-2013), Citroën DS5 (2010-2015) and Citroën C Zero (from 2010-2017). In the UK, nearly 130,000 vehicles have been affected.

Affected customers will have been notified by letter, but you can also check if your vehicle is affected by the airbag issue using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) check tool on the Citroën UK website.
