Tesco unveils online used car showroom

Supermarket giant Tesco has today opened an internet-only used car showroom at Tescocars.com.

Although it's not the only company selling used cars via the internet, Tesco is the first high-street retailer to make the jump into the motor trade.

Tesco's says its virtual showroom will bring better deals, thanks to lower overheads.

Reduce the anxiety of buying used
The company also aims to ease the anxiety that some shoppers feel when buying used cars by offering an easier route through the online showroom.

Buyers will able to view detailed pictures of the interior and exterior of each car, including a 360-degree view of the cabin. Any scuffs, scrapes or small dents are highlighted, and all vehicles undergo a vetting process that includes an RAC mechanical inspection.

A detailed description of the car is also listed on the website, along with a history report, its fuel economy data, and a video of the car being tested. Buyers then place a deposit online, before inspecting the car at the companys handover centre in Longbridge, Birmingham. Alternatively, buyers can opt to have the car delivered straight to their home.

Established online business
Rather than start from scratch, Tesco has bought into the established online retailer Carsite.co.uk. One of its chief rivals, Autoquake.com, went in to liquidation last month.

Tesco is not the only high-street name to try to break into the motor trade; Virgin Cars launched in 2000, but met with limited success until its closure in 2006.

The virtual showroom is open for business now, and can be accessed Tescocars.com
