Traffic light cameras 'cause crashes'
* Research suggests cameras are dangerous * Calls to improve lights' visibility * Jumping lights accounts for some road deaths...
Traffic light enforcement cameras cause car crashes instead of protecting motorists, according to new research.
The report, by the University of South Florida's College of Public Health in the USA, concludes that cameras provoke motorists into making abrupt stops, which causes more crashes.
Instead of installing the enforcement cameras, the report recommends improving the visibility of the traffic lights and their timing.
The study added that traffic fatalities caused by people 'running' red lights account for less than 4% of Florida's yearly traffic deaths, while road injury rates have dropped by 33% in nine years without widespread camera use.
