Volvo EX30 prices slashed by £1500 as new EV grant is introduced
Buyers will be able to save £1500 on a new Volvo EX30 until eligibility details around the Electric Car Grant are revealed...

Volvo has launched a £1500 discount across all new Volvo EX30 models in response to the recently-announced government Electric Car Grant.
Buyers will be able to save £1500 on cash, loan or PCP purchases of Volvo’s smallest electric SUV until eligibility criteria for the ECG are finalised and confirmed by the Department for Transport. This is expected to come on 11 August.
The ECG, which was announced earlier this month, promises discounts of either £1500 or £3750 on new electric cars priced below £37,000.
However, the Government has yet to reveal which models will be eligible for the grant – though it has confirmed that eligibility will depend on the CO2 emitted during a car’s manufacturing process, which means many models built outside the UK might not qualify.
The EX30 had previously been built in China before production was moved to Volvo’s facility in Ghent, Belgium in April. It’s still unclear whether the EX30 will qualify for the government grant, but Volvo will want to keep sales afloat until the outcome of its application is revealed.
While the ECG was brought in to incentivise buyers to take up electric cars, the lack of information around eligibility has instead caused sales to stagnate. Exclusive What Car? research found that one in five (21%) in-market EV buyers are now delaying their purchase to wait for details of the discount.
Volvo is just one of a number of manufacturers to have introduced its own EV grant in response to the government announcement. Chinese firms including GWM, Leapmotor, MG and Skywell have all launched their own versions of the grant with Chinese eligibility looking increasingly unlikely. Alfa Romeo also announced a discount of £1500 on its Junior Elettrica range, which is built in Poland, and Kia recently slashed finance prices of its EV3 and EV4 base-spec models by £3750.
