The Volvo XC60 will cost from 24,750 when it goes on sale this October.

That means the baby 4x4 will undercut rivals such as BMW's X3 by almost 5000.

Three engines will be available in the XC60: one petrol and two diesels. You can choose a 281bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol or 161bhp or 182bhp turbodiesels. All models come with Volvo's all-wheel drive system as standard.

Volvo is billing the XC60 as the 'safest Volvo ever' and its specification can include a low-speed crash-avoidance system, lane-departure warning facility and an auto-brake system.

Three trims are available: S, SE and SE Lux. The base S trim is only available with the two diesel engines, with prices starting at 24,750. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, roll-stability control, climate control, cruise control, an auxiliary input on the stereo and remote audio controls.

SE starts at 26,250. In addition to the S specification, you get hill-descent control, an electric driver's seat, folding electric mirrors and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

SE Lux adds chronographic dials, a leather interior, oak trim, electric heated front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear park-assist system and active headlamps. Prices start at 28,750.
