It’s what’s inside that counts, so they say. Which is why the Volkswagen Caddy is set to gain a new interior with revised looks and a raft of improved technology.
The changes, which will be applied to the Caddy Cargo van as well as the Caddy Life MPV and Caddy California campervan, centre around a new, larger 12.9in infotainment display which has customisable controls to make it easier to access frequently used functions.
As well as this freestanding screen, all models will feature Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit Pro instrument screen which allows the driver to see a range of information, including trip data and sat-nav directions.
Other new-to-Caddy tech includes wireless smartphone charging, a pair of USB-C sockets and touch-sensitive air-con controls which are now illuminated, making them easier to operate at night – and solving one of our major gripes.

The Caddy Life MPV and Cargo crew vans have grab straps fitted to the door pillars, making it easier for passengers to get in and out, and the sliding side doors open and close electrically.
Other revisions to the range include four new metallic paint hues – Reed Green, Sunset Red, Grenadilla Black and Grey-Brown – new alloy wheels ranging from 16in to 18in and new front bumpers.
As before, the Caddy Cargo small van will be available with a choice of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power, the latter capable of covering 75 miles on electricity alone. It’s expected the Caddy Life will forgo the PHEV version, while the Caddy California will be diesel-only. Depending on version, the Caddy can tow up to 1500kg.

UK prices are still to be confirmed, but models in Germany cost around €1000 more than before. That suggests starting prices of around £31,000 for the Caddy Cargo and £36,500 for the Caddy Life and Caddy California.
A special-edition version called Caddy Life Generation will join the range soon, although Volkswagen is yet to confirm details.
