VW Golf concept car emits 99g/km

Volkswagen has unveiled the VW Golf Bluemotion concept vehicle, which achieves 74.3mpg and emits just 99g/km of carbon dioxide.
The concept car is likely to make a production by mid 2009, with its fuel consumption and emissions figures matching those achieved by the cleanest mass-produced cars on sale today, the smaller VW Polo Bluemotion and Seat Ibiza Ecomotive.
The new Golf Bluemotion is powered by a 103bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine with 184lb ft of pulling power. It takes the car from 0-62mph in 11.3sec and has a top speed of 117mph.
The engine is also fitted with a diesel particulate filter to cut other harmful emissions.
The reduced fuel consumption and emissions are achieved by changes to the standard Golf's drivetrain and aerodynamics in order to maximise efficiency. Low rolling-resistance tyres are also fitted, while the five-speed gearbox has longer ratios.
The lowest emitting standard VW Golf will be powered by a 108bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine and average 62.0mpg CO2 emissions of 119g/km.
