The petrol line-up comprises a turbocharged 157bhp 1.8-litre engine and a 294bhp 3.6-litre V6.

The 1.8 emits 180g/km of carbon dioxide and returns 48.7mpg on average. The 3.6, which is linked to a four-wheel-drive system, emits 242g/km of CO2 and returns 37.2mpg.

The 137bhp 2.0-litre diesel emits 153g/km of CO2 (six speed manual gearbox) or 163g/km (six-speed semi-automatic transmission). Its average fuel consumption is 27.9mpg.

In September, a 196bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 167bhp 2.0-litre diesel will be added to the range.

The CC will be available in two trims: standard and GT.

Standard cars have sports suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a touch-screen six-disc CD system, sports seats, six airbags and stability control.

GT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, front foglights and Volkswagen's new Adaptive Chassis Control system that adjusts the ride between comfort, normal and sport modes.

The first cars will arrive in the UK from mid-July.
