The most obvious changes centre on the cars revised nose. This gets the companys family look that has already appeared on the Golf, Polo, Passat and Sharan.

The grille, bumpers and bonnet are all new, as are the Golf-style headlights, which now have the option of LED running lights. At the back, there are new tail-lights, similar to those on the new Passat, while the interior has new trims.

Although the final specification of the new car will be confirmed when ordering opens in November, Volkswagen has already said that all trims will have air-conditioning, an eight-speaker CD stereo system and sports seats. As before, the car also features a five-piece folding hard top that incorporates a tilt/sliding glass sunroof. It can be raised or lowered in 25 seconds.

Full details of the engine range are yet to be revealed, but the company has said that it will include two TSI petrol engines, a 1.4 developing 121bhp and a 2.0 with 208bhp.

There will also be a 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel unit, which thanks to Bluemotion technology including an engine stop-start system averages almost 60mpg.
