Honestly, we thought the cracking Seat Ibiza was going to have this all sewn up, with its practical interior, peppy engine and enjoyable handling. And then the used Volkswagen Polo blew it clean out of the water.

The fact that you can get a barely used Polo, with its premium interior, long equipment list and our recommended 1.0-litre petrol engine for just under £13,000 is staggering. So much so, in fact, that it's our clear winner this time.

Our recommendation, then, is to buy used.
