What should I look for in a used Renault Koleos estate?

The Koleos will most likely have been used around town, so it’s worth checking the front and the rear of the car for any scuffs and dents. Check the alloy wheels for kerb damage, too. Make sure all the electrical items in the interior work as they should and that the front seats slide and the rear seats fold properly.

When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.

What are the most common problems with a used Renault Koleos estate?

As far as problems go with this generation of Koleos, there are relatively few reported. There have been no recalls issued, but always check with your local Renault dealer to make sure.

Admittedly, some other cars in the Renault range had some issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging. This is often remedied by going for a long motorway blast to clear the filter out; if that doesn’t fix it, remedial work (if not covered by warranty) can be expensive.

Is a used Renault Koleos estate reliable?

The Koleos was too rare a car to feature in any of our What Car? Reliability Surveys. The closest comparison is probably with the later Renault Austral, a similar-sized SUV. We've included that information here just for reference.

The Austral is not a reliable car, according to the What Car? Reliability Survey. It finished in 72nd place out of 76 cars in the family SUV category, with a disappointing score of 80.4%. That’s above the 2024-present VW Tiguan, but below the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Toyota RAV4.

As a brand, Renault didn’t do much better. It finished in 20th place out of 30 manufacturers, which places it above Ford, MG and Nissan, but below Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda and Toyota.

If you would like to see the full reliability list, head to the What Car? Reliability Survey pages for more information.
