The Mk7 Golf GTE is one of the best plug-in hybrids and a great used buy. It makes sense if you do lots of short trips.
What should I look for in a used Volkswagen Golf GTE hatchback?
The GTE will have been used in tight city-centre car parks as well as on school runs and so it’s worth checking the bodywork carefully for any scuffs and dents, and the handsome alloy wheels too. Make sure the charging cable is in good condition too, as these can be expensive to repair.
On the whole, owners seem happy with the GTE in long-term use, with few reported problems. Some have mentioned minor non-engine electrical problems, with most centred around faulty warning lights. Others have had to have software updates after problems charging the car.
Perhaps surprisingly, the GTE came quite a way down the table of hybrids and electric cars in our most recent reliability survey, although it did record a respectable score of 89%.
Volkswagen, as a brand, ranked 20th out of 30 manufacturers in the same survey.
