BMW reveals X5 M and X6 M

  • SUVs get the M treatment
  • 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds
  • On sale here in October
BMW has revealed its new high-performance X5 M and X6 M SUVs.

The cars are the first all-wheel-drive models to enter the M brand, which has previously only included hot saloons and coupes.

Both cars are powered by a new 547bhp twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine. These SUVs blast from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, with a top speed limited to 151mph. The cars' top speed increases to 171mph with the optional M driver's package.

Visually, the cars have large air intakes in the front bumper, gills on the front wings and four exhaust pipes at the rear. The interior gets an M-branded steering wheel and leather sports seats.

Both cars have Dynamic Performance Control, which is designed to vary the distribution of power between the two rear wheels and gives better acceleration when exiting corners.

The cars have BMW's EfficientDynamics technology, which includes brake energy regeneration and an air-con system that can detach itself from the belt drive. The measures help both SUVs to a claimed 20.3mpg.

The cars are expected to go on sale in the UK in October and prices are yet to be announced.
