Introduction

What Car? says...

Each of us, when growing up, most likely had a person to look up to, be they a musician, an actor, or maybe even an older sibling. We dressed like them, spoke like them and, most of all, wanted to become them. In the case of the new Audi Q3 Sportback, its Q8 older sibling seems to be its guiding light.

Just like how the Q8 is a sharper-looking but less practically-minded derivative of the Audi Q7, the Q3 Sportback adds a bit of coupé-inspired style to the regular Q3 family SUV. The changes are mainly to the Q3’s posterior, with a roofline that tapers more heavily towards the Sportback’s smaller rear window, set off by an aggressive-looking rear bumper.

The Sportback shares most of the regular Q3’s range of petrol and diesel engines, with power outputs ranging from 148 to 227bhp. Audi’s 48V mild hybrid system appears on the entry-level 35 TFSI, helping to improve fuel economy, engine response and overall refinement. You also get a choice between front or four-wheel drive (quattro) as well as a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The Q3 Sportback is aimed directly at other ‘style-conscious’ cars, such as the BMW X2 and Range Rover Evoque. However, is the Q3 Sportback as fun to drive as an X2 or as quiet as a Evoque? Is it a practical family car, or just a pretty face? This review will answer those, and plenty of other important questions for you, so keep on reading.

And if you’re in the market for any small SUV, you can head over to our New Car Buying section to find out how much you could save on the brochure price, without any awkward haggling.
