Mark Pearson
Title:
Used cars editor

Mark Pearson has been a motoring journalist for more than 15 years and is currently the used cars editor for What Car?.

Mark spent his formative years at the BBC, where, at various times, he scheduled, broadcast and archived television and radio programmes and researched, wrote and produced promotional material.

After that, it seemed natural to combine his lifelong interest in motoring with his enthusiasm for writing. He joined Haymarket initially as a data assistant, before rising through the ranks to be a data editor, a sub-editor, a digital editor and a deputy used cars editor before taking up his current role in 2018.

As part of this, he oversees the used car content both in print and online, scheduling, commissioning, editing and writing content.

He has also written for Autocar, Classic & Sports Car and PistonHeads, presented online videos for What Car? and made appearances on BBC radio.

Mark is an expert in:

  • Used cars
  • New cars
  • Classic and ‘Cult Hero’ cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Motoring history
  • Chocolate-coated Oreos

Mark Pearson Q&A

What was your biggest news story?

I tend to avoid writing news stories. I must admit I prefer the reviewing side, where we drive the cars, evaluate them and then write up our thoughts.

What’s the best car you’ve ever driven?

Some cars are good at this and some cars are good at that. I find driving on tracks tedious, and supercars irrelevant for road use, so I would have to choose a supremely competent road car. Maybe an M440i, styling aside, or perhaps an Alpine A110, or maybe the latest Bentley Continental GT, which is great for long journeys. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is good fun.

What will the car industry look like in 20 years?

Alas the future of the car industry is largely in the hands of politicians, perhaps the least qualified of all people to do the job. It'll be an 'interesting' ride.
