2014 Subaru WRX STI to be sold in UK

Subaru has announced that the new WRX STI will be sold in the UK in limited numbers. The news trumps a statement issued a year ago that the model would not be sold here because of ‘insufficient demand’.

The 2014 Subaru WRX STI has a turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine that produces 301bhp and has 290lb ft of torque, and which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive. This set-up should guarantee a 0-62mph time of less than 6.0 seconds.

The WRX STI uses Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which includes a torque-vectoring system that can transfer power between the wheels to reduce understeer and improve stability. The company has also made a raft of changes to the suspension and handling, which it claims will offer a more composed ride and deliver more feel through the steering.

The new model is no larger than the old Impreza, but the greater length between its axles should mean more rear legroom. The boot is also bigger, and the door openings are wider to improve access. Subaru says it has put a lot of work into boosting the perceived quality of the interior, which will be crucial if it wants to compete with closely priced – and beautifully trimmed – rivals such as the Audi S3 Sportback.

The Subaru WRX STI will be in dealers from May. The company says it will be available only in limited numbers, and will be priced from £28,995.
