The third-generation Cayenne is due to go on sale in the next few months. The changes over the previous model are deep-rooted; the SUV is now based on a new platform, has a much better interior and, of course, is even faster.

Even the cheapest model is powered by a 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6, meaning it can get from 0-62mph in 6.2sec. Above that, there's a 434bhp V6 and a 542bhp V8. A 680bhp petrol-electric hybrid and a diesel or two will arrive soon after.

And, having driven the new Cayenne, we can tell you it’s not just speed that has been improved; it's more agile and stable at high speeds and stays remarkably upright in corners. Inside, there have been big developments, with oceans of soft-touch plastics, fine leathers, high-quality trims and, more importantly, a thoroughly modern dashboard that replaces the outgoing model’s confusing constellation of buttons around the gear selector with touchpads.
