Front space, rear space, seating flexibility, boot

There’s not much to split our contenders in terms of front seat space. Six-footers will fit comfortably in both, even with the optional fixed panoramic glass roof (£1150) in the Range Rover Evoque. The latter’s storage areas are more accommodating, though.

It’s a similar story in the back. Both have enough leg room for a couple of tall adults (although some rivals have more), but the Evoque has slightly more head room and width (making it better for carrying a third rear passenger), plus its seat bases are more comfortably contoured than the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s. The Tonale, though, comes with a pair of USB charging points in the back – a £160 option in the Evoque.

Boot capacity is nearly identical; both cars can swallow five carry-on suitcases beneath their load covers. Neither has a height-adjustable boot floor, although that isn’t a major issue, given that there’s no lip at the entrance of either boot, and both cars’ rear seatbacks fold down without making an awkward step that would impede the loading of longer items.

The Evoque’s rear seats have a more versatile 40/20/40 split than the Tonale’s 60/40 arrangement, although the latter compensates by coming with a ski hatch that allows you to poke long items through from the boot between two rear passengers.

Both cars have space for charging cables below their boot floors, but the Evoque has more thoughtful touches, such as tie-down points and hooks for shopping bags, as well as nets on the right-hand side and an elasticated strap on the left for securing smaller items.
