Alpine A110 Future prototype previews next-generation electric sports car
If you’re a film buff, you might have attended a secret screening before, where the cinema shows a film ahead of its official release date – but you don’t know what it will be. In a similar sort of way, car enthusiasts will be treated to a ‘secret screening’ at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, only this time we know exactly what it is: the Alpine A110 Future, a prototype of its upcoming electric sports car.
Indeed, Alpine will debut a test mule of the A110 EV alongside past A110 models at the Festival, with confirmation that it will be underpinned by the same bespoke technology set to underpin the upcoming production car.
Dubbed the Alpine Performance Platform (APP), the A110 EV’s underpinnings will be completely separate from other Alpine models, such as the A290 and A390, which are based on other Renault Group platforms. It’s the same technology that underpins the 533bhp Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The APP has been developed to prioritise weight reduction, and interestingly it uses two battery packs – one at the front, one at the rear for a 40:60 weight distribution – instead of one unit as is traditional in other electric cars.
The new A110 EV will be powered by two electric motors mounted at the rear. Alpine told our sister title Autocar that it should achieve more than 340 miles of range and have a kerb weight similar to that of its combustion-powered rivals, at around 1500kg. For reference, the ICE A110 was especially light and nimble, at 1100kg.
We’ll have to wait until its official reveal to see what the A110 EV looks like, though, because the Future prototype will be clad in the ICE model’s bodywork. The all-electric A110 is due to arrive in 2027.
