Perhaps the most impressive thing about the new Q5 large SUV is the quality of its interior, which puts rivals to shame. Similarly remarkable is its whisper-quiet engine and how well you’re protected from wind noise. And the ride is comfortable, even on sports suspension.

Given that the 5 Series was our 2017 Car of the Year, it’s perhaps not surprising that it still ranks highly here. But while we recommend the 520d diesel to company car drivers, we’d be tempted to upgrade to the effortlessly fast 530d if you’re buying on PCP finance deal. Whichever model you choose, though, the 5 Series stands out in key areas including refinement, interior quality and ride and handling. It's still our favourite luxury saloon.
