Best SUVs for less than £30,000
What was once a niche sector of the car market has become the biggest in Europe, with SUVs replacing traditional hatchbacks as the family car of choice. It's easy to see why, too.
The best combine the easy going driving characteristics of those hatchbacks with the elevated seating and chunky styling of 4x4s and the space and versatility of MPVs. What's more, you can get them with five or seven seats, and there are versions to suit all budgets.
Here's our round-up of the best SUVs, large and small, that you can buy for less than £30,000.
10. BMW X1 sDrive 18d SE
List price £29,235
BMW's smallest and cheapest SUV is still a practical and premium choice. There are plenty of versions on offer, too, including some with four-wheel drive. Our favourite remains the two-wheel-drive model, though, paired with the cheapest diesel engine. Even the entry-level SE trim has everything you need.

9. Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 150 SE Nav
List price £28,865
The latest Volkswagen Tiguan makes a great family car. It oozes practicality and, while it's quite an expensive choice, it's good to drive and has a smart interior. To keep costs down, we recommend opting for a mid-range diesel model in SE Nav trim. This still gets you sat-nav as well as three-zone climate control, cruise control and the more comfortable seats.

8. Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi N-Connecta
List price £25,555
The Qashqai is the car that started the trend for small, family-friendly SUVs, and it remains a decent choice. True, there are cheaper alternatives, such as the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, but the Qashqai makes up for this with a spacious, practical, well-designed interior, solid build quality and good comfort and refinement.
