Best used Peugeots

There’s a good used Peugeot to suit every budget. Here are our top picks in every price range from £1500 all the way up to £20,000...

Best used Peugeots

There have been some rather average Peugeots over the past few years but, thanks to the new 5008 and 3008, things are turning around for the French car maker. Peugeot has even bought Opel and Vauxhall, so it is obviously confident of a bright future.

But only time will tell and we live in the present, so let’s take a look back at some used Peugeots and pick out the best ones. If you are prepared to look beyond the usual suspects, you can find some interesting alternatives with reasonable mileages and comprehensive service history. To help you out, we’ve put together a list of the best used Peugeots for all budgets.

Best used Peugeots for less than £20,000

Peugeot 3008

3. Peugeot 3008

This 3008 is completely on trend, since it has now morphed into a handsome SUV. And behind the SUV looks, it is a rather excellent car. You have a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines on offer, a comfortable and absorbent ride and a stylish interior. Once you get over the small steering wheel and relatively high seating position that means you look over the steering wheel to see the dials instead of through it, you start to get comfortable with the driving position most SUV buyers are looking for. Go for the 1.2 Allure version and you’ll have a car with a premium feel and low running costs.

Peugeot 208 GTi Peugeot Sport

2. Peugeot 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport

The normal ‘cooking’ version of the 208 GTi isn’t a bad car, but the Peugeot Sport version is so much better. Compared with the standard car, you get four-piston Brembo front brake calipers and larger discs, a recalibrated electronic stablity programme that is less intrusive, revised suspension settings and 18in alloy wheels shod with sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. All these changes make the Peugeot Sport much more engaging to drive and definitely the one to look out for as a future classic.

Peugeot RCZ R

1. Peugeot RCZ R

The RCZ R is the most powerful mass-production Peugeot the company has made so far and now you can find used examples for less than the price of a new 208 GTi. Its turbocharged 1.6-litre engine delivers 267bhp, hits 0-62mph in around six seconds and is more fun to drive than a contemporary Audi TT and more comfortable than the rather punishing Mini Coupé JCW. Certainly one of the best Peugeots you can buy.

Peugeot 208

3. Peugeot 208

The 208 aims to please those who have had to downsize from larger, more luxuriously appointed cars into smaller, fuel-efficient ones. So it has one of the classiest interiors in the small car sector to satisfy those who need to save money but don’t want to compromise on quality. And, to keep the bank manager happy, there is a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines to suit all salaries.

Peugeot 308 SW

2. Peugeot 308 SW

If you need plenty of boot space, then the 308 SW is the one for you. The Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf estate have smaller load areas, plus the 308 SW's rear seats fold flat automatically when you pull the handle in the boot – a thoughtful touch. An efficient range of engines backs up the 308 SW: none of them should do less than 50mpg. The 1.2-litre 110 petrol and 1.6-litre BlueHDi 120 are the picks of the range.

Peugeot 5008

1. Peugeot 5008

Seven-seaters ought to use interior space intelligently and, thankfully, the 5008 does just that. The second row is on runners, allowing leg room to be shared between the third and second row if you transport taller people in the rearmost seats. The 5008 is also rather good to drive, running the sporty Ford S-Max very close. A fine achievement considering these cars aren’t meant to be fun. It’ll help to improve your mood when you have a car full of people all asking: "Are we nearly there yet?"

Peugeot 3008

3. Peugeot 3008

If you are in the market for a high-riding hatch, then the 3008 is worthy of consideration because it manages nearly everything the Nissan Qashqai can but for less money. It even beats the Qashqai for boot space, having one of the largest load areas in its class. The smaller 1.6 HDi is best for economy and driveability, since the equivalent petrol is a little thirsty.

Peugeot 108

2. Peugeot 108

Unlike the Toyota Aygo, to which it is closely related, you can find the 108 with either a 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre petrol engine. There is also a convertible-esque fabric roof on Top models that can turn the 108 into a small open-top car. With quick steering and relatively little body lean through turns, the 108 feels quite agile in tight urban driving. And, with low running costs and cheap insurance, it makes an ideal first car – especially as it is backed up by a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, six airbags and an electronic stability programme.

Peugeot 306 GTI-6

1. Peugeot 306 GTi

Only 4500 306 GTI-6s were sold in the UK and many have since disappeared, sadly. So, for less than £2500, the 306 GTI-6 might be ripe as a future classic. It was praised back in the day for its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine, six-speed gearbox (a bit of a novelty for hot hatches at the time), lightweight body, supple ride and fantastic handling balance – particularly the way in which the rear end could be made to step out. For those who knew what they were doing, this made the car great fun. But many probably didn’t – hence why there are so few left.

Peugeot 207

3. Peugeot 207

The 207 was a popular car back in the day. Now that time and depreciation have set in, it makes for a sensible used buy for less than £2000. The 207 has a comfortable ride, light steering to aid parking and a sizeable boot compared with rivals. It is safe, too, receiving a five-star Euro NCAP rating when it was tested back in 2006.

Peugeot 406

2. Peugeot 406

The taxi rank wouldn’t be the same without the good old 406. Thanks to its interior space, comfortable ride and strong engines, it is excellent cheap car motoring. You have a choice of hardy saloon, capacious estate or stylish coupé. Give it a bit of care and attention and there’s no reason why a bargain 406 with sensible miles couldn’t be made to go the same distance as the one that takes you home on a Friday night.

Peugeot 607

1. Peugeot 607

Perhaps it is a little bit predictable, but why the hell not? The 607 was a handsome car to look at, with a smooth ride and quiet interior (even at speed), so it makes for a brilliant cut-price luxury car. Equipment levels were high back in the day, because this was the flagship model in the Peugeot range. And while the sat-nav will be woefully dated now, you do get a lot of other useful gadgets, such as heated seats front and rear, climate control, electric seats, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers.
